    Choosing Art  as gift

I have often wondered why more people do not give art as a gift,(especially when I've just unwrapped that box of argyle socks with matching tie at Christmas). Most goods depreciate rapidly while art generally increases in value both monetarily as well as sentimental, often being handed down from one generation to the next, quickly becoming family heirlooms. The gift of art is personal letting the recipient know you have put a little thought into it, for years to come they will think of you every time they look at it. If you give a work of art there is little to no chance the person(s) will be receiving a duplicate gift.

The Creative Process

The process of creating  a work of art can vary greatly, I often make two to three trips out to the      location I will be working on just to evaluate the angle of the sun at different times of day, before I even set pen to paper. When working in black and white the shadows being cast are what help set the mood and create interest. After deciding on the time of day (occasionally the time of year) a series of digital photographs are taken from various points of view,in this day and age working on site is not always practical. After determining the best time of day and perspective for the piece I will set down at the drafting table and work out a rough pencil sketch, when I am satisfied I will finally put pen to paper.I remove all clutter from view, those thing we take for granted but which do not enhance the work, power lines, cars in the drive, garbage cans.

Gift Ideas

Of course there are the usual times you may want to give art as a gift Christmas, birthdays etc.but you may want to think of art as an alternative when a  commemorative gift is especially appropriate, here are a few examples.
